Update: Sale retires.

Salo to retire at end of season

Mika Salo has revealed that the Japanese Grand Prix in October will be his
last race in the sport, days after it was announced his services would not
be required at Toyota next year.

The 35-year-old Finn, who debuted in Formula One eight years ago in a Lotus
Mugen Honda, said he had been worn out by the major work building the
Toyota team up from scratch over the past two years.

'In a way it is a relief that it is over,' he said. 'I have driven millions
of kilometres in an F1 car.

'The work with the new team has been enormous. I have had to take part in
many other things in addition to driving.

'I do not want to go to any other team any more. It would have to be
something really special for me to even consider staying in F1.'

Salo said he had no regrets about calling an end to his career.

'I am not sad that I am not driving next year,' he declared. 'I am getting
reasonably compensated by Toyota.'

As well as driving for Lotus and Toyota, Salo has competed for Tyrrell,
Arrows, Sauber, and acted as temporary replacement driver for both British
American Racing and Ferrari during the 1999 season.

His best result so far was second, scored in 1999 at the German Grand Prix
for Ferrari.
