I do a basic $ python setup.py develop and don't keep too many different versions around at once. Most development I do is local to the machine, so I use skEdit (OSX) or gedit (Linux). Any remote editing is done in vim -- in spite of me being a fan of emacs I don't think it belongs on servers.
