You know you can just type the real character in, right?

Yes it possible, but is a pain ever if you have all necessary keyboard drivers installed.

The whole point
of having a wiki syntax is to remove these kinds of HTLM-specific
details from writing.

Which notation trac developers chose doesn't really matter - e.g.
\uNNNNN is rather  common (not HTML specific and ) syntax to enter
unicode character.
