Hi all again, I found a solution to my problem which I post here for anyone in the same situation (and for myself in case of amnesia).
I edited /etc/rc.conf and changed mysql_limits="YES" to mysql_limits="NO". Apparently, the resource restrictions imposed on MySQL by FreeBSD are rather strict. This worked for me to the extent that trac-admin now fails with trac-admin /var/trac/projects resync Resyncing repository history... Command failed: (1062, "Duplicate entry '820-<some stubified repository path>' for key 1") for which I will ask for help in a new post. (Seems like a different topic to me...)
