It was the firewall allright. Timed out connnections to backend PG server every hour. Changing Poolable=False in backend_pg.py did the trick.
I would consider this a bug in Trac - if it looses db connection proper error message should have been produced instead of timing out in infinity. And Poolable could definitely be made into a system parameter.
