Upgrading did not make the difference. it turned out the trac.db was crashed... All tickets were missing, for one thing. So, I guess I unfortunately started looking in the wrong place...
Unfortunately the message Run "trac-admin /path_to_project/trac upgrade" pointed me in the wrong direction. But then, you can't really make a program that knows everything...
