Currently we have GFileMonitor (glib > 2.16) to monitor a file or a directory for changes http://library.gnome.org/devel/gio/stable/GFileMonitor.html But everyone hope that GConfig will be available in a near future, replacing gconf. http://live.gnome.org/EmmanueleBassi/GConfig
