I think we should just remove it, or make it optionally configurable with default set to off. Because only between devices that run tracker is this a useful thing to have (it provides faster lookup of mediaart). We could also support the format or thing that for example Windows Media Player does. It puts mediaart in the same directory as the .mp3 files. That clutters the directory even more in my opinion, but tell that to the people in Redmond. We're not really a media player, so I don't think we have a mandate from the user to be writing to his removable devices. We should be as read only to filesystems that we scan as possible.
