With that method, I identified turaqd's php-mode as the place where 
file-name-handler-alist got changed (and it loaded after tramp). commenting this out, 
connecting worked fine again.

I did a few tests creating and changing files and got errors, but I think I will do 
some more testing before sending a report (and maybe compare with doing the same on a 
linux box).
