After asking in comp.unix.shell I got the following nifty suggestion: after Tramp has sent "exec /bin/sh" to the remote host, we send "PS1='$ '" after a short pause. Then we wait a couple of seconds for an answer. If nothing appears, then we send "PS1='$ '" again, and then we wait again, and so on.
