I think the main benefit you get from using Tramp is that it parses filenames for you. So if your filenames look like /imap:[EMAIL PROTECTED]:something, then Tramp can help. I vaguely remember that Michael changed some parts of Tramp so that tramp-smb.el became easier, so I think he could also benefit from one utility function or three. Michael?
