Mimi,
My original understanding of the taxonomy codes is that they were going
to be used to indicate the type of procedure (line of service) but now
it appears it is going to be used more for billing purposes tied to a
physician. I would talk to your reimbursement people to see how they
are going to determine given a particular procedure how the doc will be
reimbursed to determine taxonomy codes and if taxonomy will be used for
this purpose. Obviously some docs can do various procedures.

Vince,

The Taxonomy Code (which occurs in various places in the three claim
transactions) is somewhat like the old Provider Specialty Code.

It has no relationship with any Tax ID.

You can see a list of the current Taxonomy Codes from Washington
Publishing Company.

Select the option "To view the lists without logging in, .".

Then select Provider Taxonomy Codes.

Note that the Taxonomy Code is Required in the May 2000 implementation
guides.

One of the changes in the various Addenda was to make it Situational.

Hope this helps.

With regards to the 837i Addendum:

In Billing/Pay -To Provider Specialty Information PRV03 2000A
-Reference
Identification, does the Taxonomy Code = the Tax ID#?

Thanks!
