I can't reproduce the aviindex issue in the 1.0.2 release, much less
in CVS:

--------------------
crystal:/usr/src/transcode-1.0.2/tools> ./aviindex -o xxx file
aviindex (transcode v1.0.2) (C) 2003-2004 Tilmann Bitterberg

Usage: aviindex [options]
         -o file output file
         -i file input file
-f force the use of the existing index
only to use when avi > 2GB, because
the default is to -n with big files
-n read index in "smart" mode: don't use the existing index
-x don't use the existing index to generate the keyframes
                   this flag forces -n
         -v print version
--------------------

As for the "Thomas streich", the character before "streich" is an
O-umlaut, which probably doesn't show on the reporter's terminal (as it
didn't on mine), and all such non-ASCII characters have been converted to
their ASCII equivalents in CVS HEAD.
