I am a longtime Verizon Wireless customer and am awaiting the arrival of
the 650's release on their network.
It is possible to take any of their digital phones, connect a cable
between the phone and a computer, and dial Verizon's data number, using
the phone as a modem, to gain Internet access utilizing voice minutes.
My question is - is it possible to configure the Treo such that it sees
itself a modem, thus permitting me to use network applications, such as a
secure shell client or web browser, from the Treo itself, and "cut the
cord" between the laptop and the Treo? This would help me save money
from having to purchase an Internet/Data package, and would be completely
valid/legal, as I do not use all the minutes in my monthly plan anyway.
This might sound morelike a provider question rather than a PDA question,
but it really is a PDA question, and could apply to any PDA on the
provider's network.
Again, for example, I opt to not subscribe to a data plan, start a web
browser or secure shell client on the PDA, and have the data funnel
through a connection it makes through the "voice" line, permitting me to
access the Internet with voice minutes. Is this possible? Calling
Verizon's "modem" number as a voice call leads me to a recording saying
the call cannot be completed... Calling the same number from my laptop
connected to the phone, having the laptop think the phone is a simple
modem, yields a connection.
If the above can work, it would make it much more worthwhile to stay with
Verizon when the Treo 650 comes out, unless Verizon changes their data
plans and offers something cheaper. If not, and my wish (above) cannot be
done, then TMobile might be my only option, as they have a $20/month deal
for unlimited data access.
Thanks.
