The CPU is/was good, as it had been working fine on Renee's ABIT-VA6 for
months on end.

Um, it could be the mobo, as I've had problems with BF6's in the past.
As in, I replaced the BF6 with a VT6X4 - and only the BF6 - with no
problems as t all. 

If I had known it was a BF6, I would have warned you off - I've had
issues with that mobo in the past.

Not printed on the drive? can you throw the drive into a different
machine and pull the specs that way?

FWIW, I still have the old CPU, it's just in a difference case. It
doesn't *LOOK* head damaged, but I've not tried it yet. If we can
re-assemble it or get a P2/P3 slot-1 cooling fan assembly from
somewhere, I can re-assemble that CPU if you want.
