I just got a lite-on dvd burner over the holidays, and it took me a while to get it going. At first I tried using dvdrecord (branch off cdrecord) but it was giving me errors. The growisofs program that comes with dvd+rw-tools works though to make the filesystem and burn. If it's a dvd+rw you need to use dvd+rw-format to format the disc once before the first burn. I haven't yet gotten dvdrecord to work yet, but growisofs works for my usage.
