I found the "Starting LPR/LPD LAN Printer Installation" and "Identifying and Naming the Printer" instructions from here:

  http://www.le.ac.uk/cc/dsss/docs/print-lpr.shtml

handy in figuring out how to do what Kevin tersely suggested below.

Be sure to allow port 515 in iptables on your RedHat 9 machine if you have iptables
set up.

Worked like a charm!

Thanks,

Jeff G.

PS: Trying to print through Samba to CUPS is a piece of CRAP. It is not basic.. It is basically crap. Don't feel bad that you couldn't get it to work.... I don't know of anyone who has!

I wouldn't use SAMBA for printing, I'd use LPR/LPD for printing.

I just got a laptop which has Windows XP and I have the samba printing set up almost.

1) I added the printer
2) I mapped a network driver.

I found out that I cannot print unless I map a network drive. Is there anyway I can set up samba and XP so that it will
print without mapping a network driver. Even when they are working, the mapped printers show as unavailable.

I know this is basic but I cant seem crack the nut.

I am running redhat 9.0 with its default samba server.

Thanks in advance
