dhardison-- You're right. As it turns out, the error message was an internal Compaq error. Had nothing to do with the install. All I had to do was hit F1 to boot as normal.
A loud series of beeps (sounded like the laptop was dying) was followed by the ERROR 0280 message. I thought I had screwed up something terribly. Very relieved. Everything's back to normal, now.
