Thanks to all who responded. I hadn't really considered the client as a source of the problem...I guess I assumed that by 2005, mail clients could handle attachments correctly.
It sounds like the best bet for us is to zip our attachments and adapt our software to automatically unzip them if necessary. Thanks! C p.s.
