I've always considered there to be 3 kinds of laptops; Apples(my choice, actually), Thinkpads, and others. I'm using a Powerbook now. I have previously owned a Thinkpad and a HP. The Thinkpad was a Linux friendly tank. Tank as in indestructible. It physically took everything I threw at it. The HP was less Linux friendly. There were some driver issues that took some twiddling to resolve. Also, I didn't handle my abuse as well. I don't remember the models. If I had to get an x86 laptop, I'd go with a Thinkpad. If I'm given carte blanche, I'd go with a Powerbook.
