I was told that once as the reason why the computer "kept sticking its
tongue out." I was also told that it was too late to do anything about
it then. I'm not sure that was true or they just found it easier to
replace the drives than to routinely clean them or just to clean them then.

that's what I've always done too. But with two consecutive
drives dying with the tray mechanism not working, I thought
I'd better check.
