Folks, I don't do this often enough to have it easily accessable.
I seem to have issues adding a Windows XP Pro machine to a Samba 3 domain. I have gone through the documentation ( HOWTO and Examples ) on the Samba.org site, which confirmed what I had already tried. I already have several Win2K machines attached, along with a couple of others, as well. I added the machine's new name to the /etc/passwd ( useradd ) and smbpasswd ( -m -a ) files on the server. I then went to the XP machine, right clicked on My Computer, and selected Properties. On the Identification window, I clicked on "Change" and entered the new machine name and clicked the Domain radio button, entering the domain name ( Windows Domain, not the proper one ). I then clicked OK and was prompted for "A user allowed to join this domain." I had already used smbpasswd to set a "fake" password for root, so I entered "root" and that fake password on the XP machine and clicked OK. It pauses for a few moments and then tells me "Unknown user". I have checked the Samba logs several times, and they seem to show success, including something about "sent new SID" with a long string of digits. Something that I just thought of -- One of the Samba logs that is "current" when I am doing this, is named for the OLD name of that machine. Is my big problem that I need to change the name of the machine and reboot BEFORE I try to add to the domain; I can't do the domain join while I am changing the base name of the machine? Of course, if the answer is Yes, then I have another machine that I have issues with, I just haven't worried about it because it is connected as a WorkGroup member to a different network. Also an XP Pro machine. Also won't join the domain. In this case, I am wondering whether there is a length restriction for the Machine Name? I am not trying to change the name of this one, just join the domain. However, the existing machine name is 11 characters long. Thanks in advance for all of the usual SAGE advice, Brian -- TriLUG mailing list : http://www.trilug.org/mailman/listinfo/trilug TriLUG Organizational FAQ : http://trilug.org/faq/ TriLUG Member Services FAQ : http://members.trilug.org/services_faq/
