Could it also be an http timeout issue? E.g. was the webserver "upgraded"?
E.g. this sort of behavior was the reason for the http keep-alive in http
v1.1 from what I remember. Maybe the squirrel client does not implement
keep-alive properly/in conformance to the webserver. E.g. I know IE and
Netscape were implementing it differently in 2001 so the webserver product I
worked on had to be tweaked to work with IE's way of doing it. IE was
sending an extra carriage return or something - so maybe that is required if
the server is IIS.

A few random thoughts to look at...

- hosts.deny, hosts.allow, denyhosts
- iptables, shorewall, firewall

Look at the mail server's logs. Could this be an authentication issue?

Maybe related, maybe not. I had to add "permit_mynetworks" to my
smtpd_sender_restrictions in /etc/postfix/main.cf before I could SEND
from squirrelmail.
