I'm not sure about this. As you proved, "official" documentation can be wrong -I wrote the page referring to the extras repo component and it went outdated- and it can be fixed by anyone. The nouveau driver used to rely on a non-free firmware file, but IFAIK it does no more. Also, I understand that driver comes with the kernel now, and it will get deblobbed if needed by the linux-libre scripts.
