This is now fixed.  I installed two updates today.  The first was an  
automatic update.  I then rechecked and installed the next update found,  
which had to do with the Trisquel-desktop-common files (as best I can  
remember).  The GDM theme is back.  I also removed PCManFM and all folders  
open with Nautilus.
