To work properly, YaCy needs to be installed and running on the user's  
machine. It will exchange data with the other peers and not everybody might  
want to do that.

The URL http://search.yacy.net/ is just a demo with limited functionality,  
not the YaCy search portal! (quoting from the URL itself)

They also say:

"To get the full YaCy experience, please install YaCy on your computer. Your  
search portal is on your peer."

I don't think that having YaCy as default search engine would be a good idea.
