Mirrors are exact copies of the repository. Switching to another one would  
not give you any more or less features. The main repository is not that of  
the FSF. It is in Spain. I guess the packages are sent to the FSF mirror in a  
matter of minutes (hours?). As a consequence, the availability of an update  
will be delayed by this amount of time.

However I do not think you keep on polling the repository in search of a new  
update, do you? If you do, that is not very cool for the project: if  
everybody would do the same, the connections to the repositories and the  
server themselves would be overcrowded and the project would need to invest.  
Anyway, downloading from the FSF server (rather than from Spain) probably is  
faster if you live in America. It is like "caching" at a worldwide scale.
