I've had a quick view of code of the ROSA plugin, but so far I had no luck finding anything about controlling buttons and playback from JavaScript. Might not work as I wanted without cooperation with the ROSA plugin developers. I guess adding a JavaScript API won't be a small effort, so they might not agree. You don't have to use Totem plugin. That's the beauty of it. :) You can use any browser video plugin that can handle the mime types and suits you.
