I have two sounds outputs, the hdmi port and the sound card port. For some  
reason KDE defaults to the hdmi audio that I don't use. I had to change the  
master channel in the sound preferences.

Another classic problem in Ubuntu based distros is the sound module not  
loading. If that is the case, check the output of "aplay -l". If it doesn't  
find anything, type "sudo modprobe yourmodulename" in your case the module  
name is snd-intel8x0
