If the vga= parameters don't seem to work, then try setting this line in your  
grub settings #GRUB_GFXMODE=640x480 to GRUB_GFXMODE=1360x768 (note the  
missing # also!)

sudo nano /etc/default/grub
also remove any vga=XXX and then apply it with

sudo update-grub

and boot.
