Yeah, come to think of it, that's what I got when I tried running GNOME Shell
on a system with no 3D acceleration (Radeon integrated graphics in my case).
If this is your case, you'll need to get a new video card (or perhaps, if you
have an Nvidia card, update the kernel) to use GNOME Shell. If you need a new
video card, http://libre.thinkpenguin.com has a good one (it's under
"Accessories").
