Did you upgrade from 5.5? You probably want to remove multiarch (delete or  
comment out /etc/dpkg/dpkg.cfg.d/multiarch) and remove any i386 packages off  
your system. You can find them e.g. using the Synaptic package manager.  
(there is a sort by arch option in the left hand menu)
