Yes, that is unfortunate, especially because both gNewSense and Parabola support MIPS, a much less popular architecture. (Although that is undoubtedly due to the Lemote Yeelong) In that case, I would imagine the best you can do is install main Debian, and make sure that you do not turn on the "non-free" and "contrib" repositories. This may not be ideal, but it seems to be the only way to use the Chromebook in software freedom.
