When upgrading to a new release, I've always done as suggested in #6. Allow
the installer to format '/'; mount your old '/home' (do not allow
formatting), and mount the old swap. When your new system comes up, you'll
see all your users' files. Be sure to use the same username, in the new
install, as you have in 5.5.
