The vendor string itself does not indicate that he is running a VM and his  
video card is emulated but that lvmpipe (= the software OpenGL implementation  
of Mesa) is running.

I do not remember the exact details but AFAIK VMWare provided some code to  
the Mesa project as part of the guest 3D extension for Linux VMs.
