service script_name start will execute system V init script script_name located in /etc/init.d. System V init scripts are executed on boot. A Login Manager requires this, otherwise you'd need to start it manually from the terminal which makes it much easier to just type xinit in order to start X11. You can disable a system V init script by typing sudo update-rc.d script_name disable.
