There are few downsides that might make the project unsuccessful. Sadly it does not have federation yet, and it is not clear is it going to have. [1] The project is relatively new (August 2013) [2] and uses custom protocol [3] that still has to prove itself. They had a contest to prove it is secure. [4] The reward was $200,000 in Bitcoins for the one who breaks the encryption. No winners. I personally will monitor their progress with great interest.
