It's been tried, and failed. There have been some improvements that'll make  
it easier to contribute here-on out though. It's a lot of work and takes a  
strong commitment to really push things forward. Some of us have other  
projects to attend to as well which can make things difficult.

I still think a big part of the solution is financial. When developers can  
afford to eat it, it makes concentrating on code easier.
