In the context above I meant "editing the kernel line in GRUB and booting it" (like ssdclickofdeath explained) when I wrote "booting by hand".
With the "-i" option, the 'sed' command really modifies the file at input.
Without it, it takes the content of the file as its input and write its
output to the terminal. The input file is left unmodified.
