In that sentence, substitute "Wayland" for "systemd" and "Mir" for "Upstart" and you will see that "ever" is, at least, a too strong word. It is quite probable, say within eight years, that all major GNU/Linux distributions but Ubuntu will have chosen Wayland and Ubuntu will then abandon its Mir project like it has just done with Upstart.
Furthermore, it looks highly unlikely that Ubuntu will ever move to Wayland,
as they are developing their own custom compositor called Mir, which is due
to land in a future version.
