Mine is also 2.1.6 Rincewind (heh, Discworld).
I didn't do everything properly: I had some vlc data in synaptic even though I removed it from gnome-app-install. So I apt-get purge vlc, then removed completely (I guess it's the equivalent of purge) anything related to vlc in synaptic. Then I reinstalled vlc through synaptic. Well I tried, but it says it's a broken package that needs to be fixed first. So now I'm looking for how to do that.
