I haven't played GNUchess so I am unable to make a comparison.
Most attractive thing I found in PyChess is the ability to connect to the Free Internet Chess Server (FICS http://www.freechess.org/ ) and find players from all over the world to play against. These games can be very competitive and enriching, depending on your skill level, the opponent and the games/levels you choose.
