In the end, I fixed it by re-installing GRUB using the Trisquel liveCD.
However, I have the problem I tried to fix before: running `update-grub'
finds other Operating Systems, but asks for a username and password when I
select them (but does not do this for Trisquel) despite me having not set a
GRUB password lock.
