For How to for others who read this post and wonder why it doesn't work. Here  
is the commands to get vlc to be able to play x265/hevc.

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:mc3man/trusty-media
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install vlc vlc-plugin-libde265
