You can use a heavy client such as Evolution, Sylpheed or Icedove (a modification Thunderbird that does not propose the installation of proprietary extensions). Evolution is installed by default in Trisquel. Sylpheed is installed by default in Trisquel Mini. Icedove (and others) are available in Trisquel's repository. You can receive/send GMail's emails with all those programs. That solves GMail's JavaScript trap. Not the privacy problems.
