What's your CPU speed? You can check it in settings>about. I own an old Dell
laptop (from around 2007) and it runs GNOME Shell. This uses about 25-50% of
the CPU already, and running the package manager (updater uses the apt
process) can be quite intensive when picking lots of packages. Running
Libreoffice and Tor Browser or IceCat often pushes the CPU count up to 100%.
You could try something more lightweight, e.g. Xfce, which is very
customisable and easy to use.
Tor browser does not modify Firefox, it adds several add-ons and settings to
make it safe to access Tor (hence the name, "Tor Browser Bundle").
You could also try running rkhunter (to find root-kits) and ClamAV just to be
reasonably sure something nasty hasn't found its way onto your computer.
