These instructions only work for wired networks, which are relatively simple. You will need to configure wpa_supplicant because there are many different types of wireless networks. It's just a start before installing wicd or similar, because you were complaining about no connection with eth0.

On a different note, the reason you see nothing in /home/user is because you have no applications that will need them with a netinstall. Just install a graphical environment e.g. Xfce and they will probably be created, or just create them yourself; they are mostly arbitrary anyway such as Videos or Templates and not an "official" UNIX standard (unlike the directories in /), it's just that most desktop environments tend to use the same set of folders.
