Coreboot already has support for various things that need the ME. The  
important stuff, like hardware initialization and power management, are still  
dependent on them. Someone needs to figure out a way to write a free  
replacement for it (but even if they did - don't forget there are  
cryptographic keys involved so even if someone did manage to make a free  
replacement program the system won't accept it because it won't be signed  
with the right key. This fundamental problem has not changed and this  
announcement brings us no closer to a solution.
