Your desktop environment is just an interface for your operating system. You 
can install a different desktop environment without affecting anything in the 
underlying operating system. You can even have multiple desktop environments 
installed at once. When you log in you choose which desktop environment you 
want to use for that session. There's a small icon at the login screen you can 
click on to see a drop-down menu of all the desktop environments you have 
installed.
