I'm not able to duplicate this failure to use the search on the YouTube site.
I can see that there are 4 Javascripts hosted on www.youtube.com but I'm
not running any of them and the search function works fine. The only aspect
of the search that doesn't work is search keyword hints (giving you hints
about what to search for as you type). However one doesn't need that
function to search YouTube videos on the YouTube website.
Also the search_query parameter on the URL works. So
https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=free+software turns up many hits.
